Guest Workshop: Musical Improv

IT'S Guest Workshop

Philip Markle: Musical Improv

Finding the Form & the Fun!

Saturday October 21, 10:00-17:00

This one-day intensive will teach students the building blocks of what makes compelling musical improv. Students will learn how to create fully improvised songs on the spot, as an ensemble and as individuals, that feature memorable choruses and compelling, rich verses with distinct melodies & lyrics. We will explore how to frame satisfying one-act narrative stories, through plot and character, and hone the components that go into turning musical improv into a theatrical experience.

And once we've worked on all that technique, we will let go of doing it "correctly," and play from our gut, surprising yourself and your audience. To above all have fun and discover the joy of musical improv!

Open to all experience levels: recommended previous taking at least one musical improv class/workshop.

Testimonial: "The Musical Improv workshop with Philip was fantastic! He is full of energy and knows what he's talking about. We had a really fun time and took away a lot. So even after just three hours we now have a very good foundation and are highly inspired to develop our own show." - Tobias Sailer, Artistic Director, AMS! Guest Workshop: Burn Your Fear

IT'S Guest Workshop

Philip Markle: Burn Your Fear

Sunday October 22, 10:00-17:00

This one-day intensive aims to light your improvisation on fire. It will help remind you what you love about improv, slap you out of whatever fear is holding you back, and cut out the naysaying voices in your head that cloud your inspiration. We will look at how we sometimes censor or bail on our choices out of a need to make the “right choice" when improvising. Instead, let's agree that there is no right or wrong choice, only a weak or strong one, and see what happens when we give ourselves the freedom to simply trust and commit to whatever comes up.  We will marry a sense of playful abandonment with actionable techniques to start scenes boldly, heighten them via specific and surprising choices, and employ context (who, what, where, when, why, etc.) without getting in our heads about it. This class will move quickly, keep you on your feet, and challenge you with personal feedback. Let's bring the whimsy to your make-em-ups!

Testimonial: "Philip, You found the truth and freedom in a bunch of rigid improv rules that all other instructors seem to keep hounding to the ground. Thank you for taking the time to get to know each person's needs to give personal notes. I've never had an instructor do that so intentionally. You are such a gifted teacher. I hope to be a fierce improviser like you once I stop apologizing." - Grace Chang, Student, Burn Your Fear

"Tamara created an exceptionally fun and open learning atmosphere for our Level 2 intermediate improv class. Supportive in every sense, Tamara has a good eye for spotting strengths and weaknesses, always offers concise feedback and challenges students to find new dimensions in themselves that they might not have known were there. I’d recommend Tamara’s class to anyone.”
